It’s a new month and UFC commissioner Dana White has exciting news.
Just announced for UFC 317 in June, Daniel Cormier and Brock Lesnar will finally be meeting in the octagon.
After years of speculation and trash talk, it’s happening.
Cormier, a former heavyweight and light-heavyweight champion, is just 46 years old and believes he has a lot left in the tank.
“I feel like I am entering my prime. All I needed was a five year break and I’m back,” said Cormier.
White has yet to announce why this fight is happening as many UFC fans were hoping for a different fight announcement.
Jack Dolan, a junior at SUNY Brockport, is more confused than anything.
“I thought we were getting Topuria vs. Olivera or Jones vs. Aspinal,” said Dolan. “Instead we got a 46 and 47 year old fighting for no reason at all.”
Lesnar, now aged 47, hasn’t fought since 2015, but he’s excited for the challenge.
“After my years in the WWE, I figured I’d come back to staged fighting, the UFC,” said Lesnar.
This fight will be taking place at a catchweight of “whatever weight they decide they can make” per Dana White.
Also on the card, it’s the return of the Notorious One, Conor McGregor.
His opponent is also making a return, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Both fighters are still just 36 despite historical careers in the UFC.
McGregor has been talking of a comeback for quite some time now, but this is completely unexpected from Nurmagomedov.
An interesting aspect of this fight is that it’s at middleweight, a big step for two career lightweight fighters.
Also, McGregor will not be getting drug tested during this training camp.
“We just really wanted to see what would happen,” said White. “We might let him drink Proper Twelve in between rounds.”
Nurmagomedov is a bit more focused than Mcgregor, which is normal.
He’s been seen pacing around his gym whispering, “Brother, two-three years Dagestan and forget.”
In the prelims, there was one announcement that caught UFC fans’ eyes.
Bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili will not be fighting, but simply running around the arena.
“Everyone knows how good of a motor he has, but this is the true test,” said White.
He’ll be running around the concourse of T-Mobile Arena until he tires out.
Fans will still be allowed to be in the way as they get food or drinks. Dvalishvili will simply have to figure out how to run around them.
This sure looks like it’ll be a great card to lead us into July.
Lastly, Happy April Fools Day from the Judge’s Scorecard!
